History

Burgas Free University (BFU) is a private non‑state university in Bulgaria, established by an act of the **Great National Assembly on 18 September 1991, making it one of the earliest private universities in the country. It is located in Burgas, a major cultural and economic city in southeastern Bulgaria. BFU is accredited by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency and holds international quality certifications such as ISO 9001. The university maintains extensive international cooperation and Erasmus+ mobility programmes with institutions worldwide.


Faculties and Academic Programs

BFU offers a broad range of Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degree programmes across multiple academic fields through its main faculties:

1. Faculty of Business Studies

  • Accounting and Finance

  • Marketing and Digital Communications

  • Economics and Management (Industry)

2. Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering

BFU’s programmes are available in Bulgarian, with some coursework and courses offered in English (such as selected Erasmus+ modules).


Admission & Registration Process

Application Steps for International (Non‑EU) Students

  1. Document Preparation

    • Prepare your secondary education diploma (for bachelor’s) or university degree (for master’s).

    • Obtain notarisation and apostille where required.

    • Translate documents into Bulgarian if not already in a recognised language.

  2. Submission of Documents

    • Submit your application and supporting documents through the BFU official admissions portal or via an authorised representative (e.g., a consultancy or agent).

    • Pay any application or processing fees if applicable.

  3. Review & Acceptance

    • BFU evaluates your submitted documents and confirms eligibility for your chosen programme.

    • You receive an official acceptance offer or conditional admission letter.

  4. Ministry of Education Permission (Non‑EU Only)

    • For students from outside the EU/EEA zone, the university submits your accepted application documents to the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science for a study permission letter required for a Type D student visa.

  5. Visa Application

    • After receiving the permission letter, apply for a D‑type student visa at the Bulgarian consulate or embassy in your home country.

  6. Arrival & Final Registration

    • Once your visa is approved and you arrive in Bulgaria, you complete final registration at BFU, pay tuition fees, and begin your studies.
