History

South‑West University “Neofit Rilski” is a public state university located in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. It was originally founded in 1976 as a higher education institution and became an independent university with its current name in 1995 by resolution of the Bulgarian Parliament. The university is named after Neofit Rilski, a prominent Bulgarian educator and cultural figure.

SWU is accredited with the highest assessment grade by the Bulgarian National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency, ensuring high quality in academic programs and research.

Faculties & Academic Areas

South‑West University offers a comprehensive range of programs across many fields of study. It has 9 main faculties providing education in Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees:

Admission & Registration Process (General)

Below is the typical process for international students applying to South‑West University, similar to other Bulgarian universities:

  1. Program Selection and Inquiry
    Choose your desired degree program (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD) and contact the International Office / admissions team for detailed requirements.

  2. Document Preparation
    Prepare your high school diploma and transcript (for Bachelor’s) or university diploma and transcript (for Master’s/PhD). These documents must be notarized, apostilled and translated into Bulgarian if necessary.

  3. Submission to University
    Submit your required documents to the University Admissions Office or via an authorized representative (like Uni‑Bulgaria YED). The university reviews and confirms eligibility.

  4. Recognition & Pre‑Registration
    Once your documents are approved, SWU issues an acceptance or pre‑registration confirmation.

  5. Ministry Permission (Non‑EU/EEA Students)
    For students from outside the European Union, the university submits your documents to the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science to obtain the study permission letter required for a Type D Student Visa.

  6. Visa Application
    With the permission letter and proof of accommodation, apply for the Type D student visa at the Bulgarian consulate in your country.

  7. Arrival & Final Registration
    After visa issuance, you travel to Bulgaria, complete final registration at the university, pay tuition fees, and begin your studies.
